Which English classes should I take?

After completing the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) placement test at the Boise State Assessment Center, you will be given a score that will determine what class you can enroll in.

ESOL score of 1

You are not ready for University level classes. These are some community resources for improving English language skills:

  • two students talking in classIntensive English Program this program is for students who want intensive study of English–20 hours of English classes per week. For more information call (208)426-1921.
  • Free Community ESL Classes are available for any English language learner living in the Boise and Nampa areas. These classes are run by the College of Western Idaho. For Boise classes, call 562-2571. For Nampa classes, call 562-2014.
  • Learning Lab is a computer assisted learning center for adults and families. Students learn conversation, vocabulary and pronunciation in addition to the basic skills instruction. For more information contact Lila at (208) 850-6040.

BUSCOM 197: Intercultural Business Language Development

Time: Wed/Fri 9:00am – 10:15am
Location: MBEB 1100
Multilingual and native English-speaking students will develop their proficiency in business-related English and view various business communication genres through a cultural lens. PREREQ: ENGL 123 or PERM/INST.
The ENGL 102 Prerequisite will be waived to take BUSCOM 201 for students who pass ENGL 101 and BUSCOM 197.
